A jury in California has ruled that Starbucks must pay $50 million (around Rs 434.78 crore) to delivery driver Michael Garcia. This decision follows an incident on February 8, 2020, when a hot coffee spilled on Garcia during a drive-thru order at a Starbucks in Los Angeles. The cause of the spill was a poorly sealed lid on one of the drinks, which led to third-degree burns, nerve damage, and permanent scarring on Garcia’s body.
The incident caused Garcia both physical and mental anguish, significantly impacting his life. His lawyer, Michael Parker, explained that the harm Garcia experienced was not only due to the physical pain but also the psychological trauma that followed. The jury awarded damages for Garcia’s pain, suffering, and the irreversible effects of the injury.
Starbucks has expressed disagreement with the verdict and has announced plans to appeal. A spokesperson for the company, Jackie Anderson, stated that while Starbucks sympathizes with Garcia, it believes the jury’s decision was flawed. Anderson emphasized that the company maintains high safety standards, particularly when it comes to handling hot beverages in its stores.
Prior to the trial, Starbucks had proposed a settlement of $3 million (₹26 crore), later increased to $30 million (₹261 crore). Garcia was open to settling but insisted on public apologies from Starbucks, policy changes, and the implementation of additional safety measures for handling drinks. Starbucks, however, rejected these conditions, which led to the case proceeding to court.
This case has drawn comparisons to the infamous McDonald’s coffee spill incident from 1994, in which Stella Liebeck was severely burned by hot coffee, resulting in a nearly $3 million award.
